Not even kidding, this big girl room renovation was over 2 YEARS in the making.
[ReviewDisclaimer]
It all started when we moved into our new home in March 2017. Although we only moved a mile away, into a totally renovated house, I had a HUGE list of projects I wanted to complete, myself. (Hello! This is my FOREVER house! It needs my touch.) 😉
One room I couldn’t wait to get started on was my eldest daughter’s. Lilly had a sweet nursery at our old home, and the memories in that room are so vivid in my heart and mind. From a design standpoint, I wasn’t totally in love with it – I couldn’t ever really get a handle on a theme or color scheme – but I treasure it to this day because it was a precious little room, filled with a LOT of love.
Unfortunately, I was overly-ambitious on what could be done in such a short amount of time and also… entering my third trimester. (Oh yeah, that’s right! Enter a whole other little girl’s room that needed decorating. Pass the wine. OH NO! I can’t have wine!)
Fast forward, new baby arrives, and around the 3 month mark, Maddie – the second child – had a perfect nursery. (I’m obsessed with it.) Pan over to my eldest’s room… still incomplete. She’s 2 at this point. Seasons come and go, her THIRD birthday arrives and I’m convinced; new room = perfect birthday present!
Nope.
Around 3 1/2, big girl decides she’s over the crib. K, no excuses, it’s really time to get my butt into gear. So we pulled the trigger on a mattress and… that’s literally all that changed for 3 more months.
Then, things FINALLY started moving. (As much as they can for someone severely suffering from shopping-related analysis paralysis.) Multiple bought/returned tufted headboards, the IMPOSSIBLE search for a girly dresser that wouldn’t break the bank. Don’t get me started on the comforter. 12 different paint samples and painting the ENTIRE room a shade of gray that should have been inside a prison cell before RE-PAINTING said room the final color.
But here we are!
I just love her big girl room as it totally represents my little diva’s personality. Glam, girly, soft, with a hint of “princess!” In fact, we’ve included touches of “Sleeping Beauty” (her favorite princess) so that we made it a room perfect for a “little girl” as well. (Don’t tell her I called her little.) 😉
This picture gives the truest representation of the lavender/gray wall color, (which again, was a trial and error process.) It’s called Gossamer Silk by Sherwin Williams. It’s light, airy, and girly without being mistaken for full-on purple.
Can you guess which sample was the winner?
ANSWER: Top middle!
The second piece we purchased (after the mattress) was the headboard! It took a few different tries to secure the right one, but it was worth the wait! The 3-piece white comforter set came from Steinmart.
Hidden underneath those 50 throw pillows… unicorn sheets! Lilly loves them because she loves unicorns. I love them because the ponies easily indicate what direction to put the sheet on. (#momhack)
The monogram (and gold chandelier pictured earlier) were the two main pieces that made the move from Lilly’s old room; purchased YEARS ago. But I found these beautiful floral accent pieces from Etsy – The Winding Vine and they complete the look for me. The lamp came from Hobby Lobby and the gold nightstand, from Wayfair.
To the right-hand side, you catch a sneak-peek of the simple Sleeping Beauty touches I mentioned earlier. Which leads me to…
Ok the HARDEST part of a “big girl’s” room is your big girl ACTUALLY has an opinion on what said room should look like. So somewhere, you have to draw a compromise between your ambition to model your kid’s room after Joanna Gaines’ AND an explosion of hot pink and glitter unicorn toots.
There IS a way to do this correctly.
For the win!
Original layout (not winning!)
The Sleeping Beauty wall originally resided above the dresser, (previous picture.) But it was way too busy for me, so we opted for this layout instead. The song lyrics in the gold frames were a gift from her aunt, and the white lattice art came from TJ Maxx.
As for the dresser, that was a too-good-to-be-true 50% off flash deal from Pottery Barn Kids. It was still more expensive than what I wanted to spend, but it was a steal from the original price.
To the right of the dresser, Lilly has a bonus closet that I knew would be the perfect princess hideout. I didn’t have the right space for Jenny’s amazing playroom tent, but we were able to work with this instead…
Ta-da! Some cheap curtains from At Home and $5 string lights from Target made the perfect hideout for Lilly and her dozens of stuffed animal friends. We love to curl up and read in there.
Lilly’s room has one unique corner that separates the “princess closet” from her normal closet. I had the WORST time trying to figure out what would go here—the world’s smallest chair? The world’s smaller desk? Nope! Found this modern bookshelf on Amazon, and it’s totally perfect for the space, and all of her knick-knacks.
That’s it! A glam, shabby chic, princess-inspired big girl room made JUST FOR my Sleeping Beauty!
She reminded me to take a picture of us because she was so happy about the photoshoot in her new, pretty room. (PS- it’s not new to her, she’s had it this way for months. But I’ll take any opportunity for a selfie with that smile.)
There are SO many nursery reveals and designs out there… featuring a big girl room was a REAL treat! Do you have any favorite rooms for toddlers/older kids? I’d LOVE to see them!

Beautiful! My daughter’s name is also Lilly (with three “L”s)! I love the flower accents and am going to check out that Etsy shop. I also think the way you settled on the picture display was spot on. It looks amazing. Well done mama!
I recently upgraded my girls’ room but used washi tape to make a gallery wall. FAIL. The washi tape I got wasn’t strong enough and all of my intricate washi frames eventually peeled and fell off the wall. Devastating. I haven’t had it in me to put the pictures back up. This is inspiring me though!

Thanks, Rach! YES! Three L “Lilly’s” are pretty special. 😉 The Winding Vine was great! She does a lot of full circular wreaths but I asked for a custom order, and she made this happen! I ended up just using command strips to adhere them to the wall. And thank you for the compliment! I’ve never heard of washi tape! I’ll have to look it up. I’m sure whatever you end up with will be incredible! It’s so funny, we’re harder on ourselves about these girls’ rooms than they are. 🙂
