The Secret To A Perfect DIY Turban Headwrap

If you know me, you know I’m pretty funny about what my kid wears. I don’t know why, but I always want her to look nice and put together. Meanwhile, I look like hot trash, no makeup, and have “athleisure” in every style and color. Anyway, Cam was BALD when she was a baby. Literally she had NO hair for a long time and everyone thought she was a little boy (eye roll). Insert DIY turban headwrap for the WIN!

The wrap also helped  shield her little bald head from the sun in the summer. She had such a peanut head and NO hats would fit her except this visor and again, I’m funny about what she wears and I’m not a fan of the bucket hat look.

The head wrap, also known as a doek, has been around in black culture for a long time. I’ve seen so many beautiful, strong black women wear them throughout the years and I’ve always loved the way they looked. To me, those who wear a head wrap are strong, independent and not afraid to make a statement. Since Cambria is mixed, putting her in a head wrap meant more than it just being cute.

Instead of buying something,  I went on a quest to figure out how to tie one myself. I played around with some scarves that I had that I didn’t mind tearing up. Through my trials, I found the perfect fabric that’s super cheap and the easiest way to tie the head wrap WITHOUT trying to tie in on her head.

Since then, I’ve seen many small shops opening up selling the turban head wraps for $25-30 each! They look cute but they almost NEVER fit correctly. Buying one means someone is estimating how big your kid’s head is based on their age and it’s almost guaranteed to be baggy on the top. Plus, I love how different each knot looks when you tie them yourself!

Purchasing one is perfect for someone who doesn’t know how to tie a shoe. If you know how to tie a shoe and have a $5 budget, this head wrap is perfect for you! I don’t give away my secrets very often but this one is just too cute and easy not to share!

Here’s what you need:

Here’s what to do:

1.) Pick out some really cute fabric. I typically like solids because they will match virtually any outfit but I can’t resist the prints! Buy a half yard (extra in case you screw up)

2.) Cut the fabric so it’s a LONG scarf. Mine is about 20” wide and 54” long. **PRO TIP** If your babe has a tiny head (ie they’re less than 1), you DON’T want the fabric to be SUPER long or the knot will be bigger than their head! Test out the length and snip the fabric so you have enough to make a tie and some left over for the knot.

3.) Blow up the balloon a tiny bit smaller than your babe’s head. I like to go smaller because since the fabric is stretchy, it will stretch over her head and make a nice tight (but comfortable) fit. Place the balloon between your knees.

4.) Place the fabric over the balloon. The long ends will be hanging off the sides and the fabric on the back of the balloon should be down far enough to fit over the head. You want the finished product to go all the way down to their neck.

5.) Take the two long ends and twirl them toward the front to make a tight fit on the balloon.

Twist-Wrap

6.) Tie the two ends together (like step 1 of tying your shoe…)

7.) Lightly twist the two ends separately

8.) Twist them together to make 1 strand

9.) Wrap the 1 strand around the tie in a circle until you get to the last bit of fabric

10.) Tuck the ends into the folds and cover up any loose pieces of fabric

11.) Pull it off the balloon and make sure the knot is tight

12.) Bribe your child with a soda to sit still and put the knot to the front, hold in place, and pull the fabric over their head to the base of the neck. I always pull it over the ears to avoid the elf look.

Here’s the answer to the million dollar question: HOW DO YOU KEEP IT ON THEM?

Cam totally loves pulling stuff off her head but she usually forgets it’s on after a little bit. If she’s in the car seat, she will pull if off without a doubt. I’ll wait until we get where we are going, put it on and then get her out of the seat. By the time she gets out, she’s too busy looking around to remember I put something on her head. Remember, if it’s too hot, it will make their head super hot and if it’s too tight, it will be uncomfortable for them.
