We’ve seen them, we’ve envied them. We’ve tried to recreate them and failed. There’s this weird self-imposed pressure to have the picture-perfect nursery, because let’s be honest, you want to give your sweet little newborn a sanctuary.
[ReviewDisclaimer]
Neither of my daughters’ rooms were ready by their arrival (#preemieproblems, #procrastination.) This last time around, we were moving into a new home exactly 3 months prior to Maddie’s due date, so needless to say I had a few other things on my plate. But shortly after her arrival, once we had adjusted into our new routine as a family of four and I rediscovered some hormonal clarity, I could finally focus on creating that “perfect space.”
And now? Maddie’s room is a little slice of heaven to me.
*Product links to the pieces in her room are at the bottom of this post!*
While I am personally obsessed with Maddie’s nursery, I am far from an expert in interior design. Decorating stresses me out. That’s exactly why I am writing this post today. I believe there’s a fairly simple formula to designing a beautiful nursery, whether you’re Joanna Gaines… or me. 😉
So, for wherever you fall on the spectrum, here are THE 5 ESSENTIALS you need for your nursery dreams to come true:
1.) Chandelier:
Baby boy, baby girl… doesn’t matter, you need a chandelier. A chandelier can be the statement piece in your nursery. It doesn’t even have to a bank-breaker. Ours came from Lowes – currently on sale for $99.
Pairing wood and wrought iron is my absolute favorite, and the great part about this chandelier is that it is totally gender neutral. The peach and cream in the rest of the room help soften it up for a baby girl.
2.) Crib:
(Wait, did this chic really just prioritize a chandelier before a crib?) YUP. And I regret nothing.
Anyway! For it to really qualify as a nursery, you’re going to need a crib. But here’s a secret, you don’t need to splurge on a glamorous, expensive crib if you’re doing the rest of the room right. I opted for something simple and practical; it’s a convertible crib that can grow with Maddie into a toddler bed, as well as a full bed. And it will look perfect with the full bed set I already bought her. 😉
3.) Rocker:
My rocker is not the most glamorous, but my takeaway for you here is that it needs to function in your space. Our bedrooms are on the smaller side so a stationary rocker/ottoman combination would just not work. A recliner-rocker, does!
Rockers are often a matter of debate—do you need it/can you do without—but let me tell you, outside of the nights it has saved my life trying to get a newborn back to sleep, it’s also a sentimental piece that has heard hundreds of bedtime stories and witnessed thousands of cuddles.
4.) Rug:
Call “rugs on carpet” a little extra, but I think our Urban Outfitters rug makes this room. The color palette won me over and I ended up building the entire room around this rug.
5.) Accent Wall:
A fun wall will change the dynamic of the room! This can be as simple as paint, decals, a custom monogram – or – more substantial like shiplap or wainscoting.
And while it wouldn’t classify as “essential,” don’t forget to personalize and accessorize. Use a gallery wall, greenery, a mobile, pictures, and other sentimental items for the cherry on top. I have two handmade quilts from friends/family that mean the world to me in Maddie’s room.
As promised, here is the full list of links for the essentials in Maddie’s room:
As a final word of advice, embrace your personal style. I love Maddie’s nursery so much because it feels like something I dreamt up, not a recreation of a “Pinterest nursery.”
Speaking of which, here are a few of the different nursery styles we have across the Poms2Moms team!

This nursery is gorgeous! I love the “not so baby-ish” nursery trend. It makes it so much more inviting for the parents as well. And I agree, the rocker is definitely essential!

Thank you, Jenny! The babies are little so they can’t enjoy it the way we can, right? Bigger kids on the other hand… I have a 3 year old who needs Sleeping Beauty all over her room, ASAP (those are her words.) Thanks for checking it out!
